If you're true to me / I shadow you, you shadow me

It is a universal truth that The Beach Boys would be much cooler if they had a differen't band name. I absolutely love Pet Sounds (who couldn't?). It really is a masterpiece. My favourite song on the album is I know there's an answer. Apparently the original song was called Hang on to your ego, but Mike Love thought the lyrics were about LSD or something and not good for the Beach Boys image so a new set of lyrics were written. Even better, Sonic Youth covered it too.

This song of mine has had two lyrics as well. The original version (If you're true to me) was sung to try and trap the melody. The second one (I shadow you) was my attempt at making it less...I dunno...dumb? obvoius?

What I am trying to do at the moment is write a 'near the end of set, but not quite the final number pop song'. This was my third attempt this summer.

To me, it sits somewhere between Bob Mould and REM.

And as for The Beach Boy's...I threw in a do-ron-ron for them.

I actually really like the do-ron-ron backing vocals quite a bit.

Version #1
If You're True to Me
(Music and Lyrics by Andrew Savage)

I see you're making new connections
I can see you're getting bored of me
I can feel the creeping of rejection
Love's labours lost on me

Tell me what it is,tell me what it means
If you're true to me

Now this could be my season
It could be the revival you promised me
I wonder, could this be the reason
You put your mark on me

Tell me what it is,tell me what it means
If you're true to me

You're glance it gives me trouble breathing
I can feel your hands all over me
I got confused by the reflection
Do you believe in me?

Tell me what it is,tell me what it means
If you're true to me

Version #2
I Shadow You, You Shadow Me
(Music and Lyrics by Andrew Savage)

I see you're making new connections
I can see you're getting bored of me
I can feel the creeping of rejection
Love's labours lost on me

I shadow you, you shadow me

Now I'm a line on your horizon
I'm just an ego you can bleed
I'm not believing, I'm denying
The blame you placed on me

I shadow you, you shadow me

You're glance it gives me trouble breathing
I can feel your hands all over me
I got caught up in your reflection
Now you're the thorn inside of me

I shadow you, you shadow me
